Free Comic Book Day 2012

Tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day, and that is excellent. Baltimore folks should swing by Atomic Books and snag a copy of Mutant #3 for the low, low price of $0. It's going to include this Garfield strip by yours truly.

Free Comic Book Day

Whoo! Happy Free Comic Book Day everyone! As part of the festivities, I've got a strip in Atomic Books' "Mutant #2" which you can pick up at Atomic today, for FREE! Here's some rough sketches of what would become my strip, but you'll have to snag a copy to see the real deal.

Vinylmore 4

Hey all! Vinylmore 4 opens this Friday, April 1st, and I'm participating once again! Join me on my latest toy-making journey.

So I started with some sketches related to the boombox I posted a while back, ultimately settling on this:

I did a ton of painting but was totally unhappy with how it was coming out and ultimately ended up scrapping that plan entirely. (It also didn't feel like "me," but rather a kind of generic popular aesthetic thing).
So here's the next sketch I ended up at:

Variations on this dark haired, bespectacled, stripey-shirted gal have been appearing in my work a lot recently, and I decided she was ready to move into the 3D world.
A sketch of the mystery girl for this comic:

She's popped up in varying forms in other pieces like this as well.

So the final result? I present to you "Dream Girl":

A far nicer photo by Rachel Whang can be seen here!

Again, the opening for Vinylmore 4 is this Friday, April 1st, from 7pm–10pm! Check out the Facebook event page here.

Atomic Books Banner

I drew the new springtime banner for Atomic Books' website; you can see it on the site by clicking here:

Here's a picture of the two versions I made; if you scroll to the bottom you'll see the nighttime scene at the bottom of the site.

You can see it in super-rough sketch form here, along with some other really rough sketches I gave them. We went for the one that had the most to do with the store and related to spring a little too.

More Girls

Hey! I'm super excited because May 1st is Free Comic Book Day. Atomic Books is going to have copies of Mutant #1, their annual free comic (Stupid Horse made a proud appearance in Mutant #0), which this year is going to be a pack of mini-comics from a ton of awesome artists. My contribution is "More Girls," featuring all previously unpublished strips from the new Guide to Girls with Toilet-face.
You can peep the cover for my mini here, drawn especially for this project:

I'm itching to make a color version! Oh yeah.

Pizza Party

Hey! Here it is, as promised, my second Munny for Vinylmore 3: "Pizza Party."

Mmm! I promise this is only loosely based on a real-life person or persons.

Here's the base on its own. I put in footholes so the figure can go on the base sturdily but still be removed- nothing was worse as a kid than discovering your new toy figure didn't come off its base- so I knew this guy had to detach.

Here's the pile of pizza boxes, pre-arrangement & painting.

Remember, Vinylmore 3 opens on April 2nd, 7PM at Atomic Books. Be there! I will!

Awesome poster designed by Exit 10. More info on Vinylmore here and on Facebook.

Gabba Gabba Hey

Hey! Atomic Books' annual toy show Vinylmore is nearly upon us again. This year the show is Munnyland, and I'm going to have two Munnys in the show. The first to be completed is this guy, a (temporarily) unnamed lil' punk pretty openly based on this painting I did a few months back.

He's a mini Munny, so with his 'hawk he measures around 5 or so inches high.

Vinylmore 3: Munnyland opens April 2nd at 8PM. Info at Atomic Books or ol' Facebook.

Hey, tomorrow is Free Comic Book Day, which is a grand and wonderful thing. Support your local comic book store and go get some free comics and y'know, maybe buy something too. If you're in Baltimore you should totally drop by Atomic Books and pick up Mutant #0, which includes a previously unpublished one pager I did starring Stupid Horse- you might've seen it here on the blog, but now you can legitimately own it! Mutant also has work from a ton of other awesome folks and friends, and will cost you exactly $0... check it below.

MUNNY'D

I took a crack at my first custom vinyl toy for the upcoming Vinylmore show at Atomic Pop. I'm excited, It came out better than I expected (because I expected very little of myself!). I was readily convinced by several friends to pursue my chunky pale clownish characters for it, and while the Munny will never be as fat as I like my characters, I'm still pretty happy with the results.
