Two Fat Ladies

This past February, I came home around 2:30 AM after a fun Saturday night, crashed on the couch, turned on the TV, and stumbled across the first episode of "Two Fat Ladies" that I'd ever seen. For anyone uninitiated, it was a cooking show made in the 90's about these two (fat) British ladies who each week travel to a different location and cook stuff there. The cooking isn't entirely the point though; they're fantastically garrulous, hilarious ladies, and the real pleasure of the show is their conversation. Even better, they travel everywhere on a motorcycle and sidecar!

I was so taken with the show I just had to do an illustration.

I tried to pay tribute to both their kicking motorcycle ways and their cooking, as well as their personalities and chemistry. I hope you enjoy- and I totally recommend the show if you haven't seen it.

I'm developing an assortment of new comics around a theme (more on this later!) and wanted to get in the groove, so I made this one-pager as a way of diving in. I've been totally enamored with these really wacky Hostess comic book ads from the late 70's and early 80's ever since a friend sent them my way (thanks Mark!), and I've really wanted to make some sort of homage myself.

I couldn't resist bringing Toilet-face in for something akin to the Archie ads, but with, you know, a slightly darker twist before the inevitable ending.

One of the things I'm working on right now is a short comic, about 5-6 pages, about a couple of teens in suburbia and their desultory relationship, which I'm currently pencilling. I'll be showing more progress, but for now here are some character sketches.

For the girl, I had a pretty clear idea how I wanted her to look. These sketches were mostly about figuring out body shape and proportion... the bad sketches are noted as such. The ideal is something more along the lines of the crying one.

I was less sure about the guy, so I had to go through various little heads before I found what I liked. Finding the right balance of cute and sketchy was one of the main concerns. You can also see one of my sketches of the two of them together, getting an idea for their proportional relationship. He's older so he's taller with a smaller head, etc, etc...

Hey all! Vinylmore 4 opens this Friday, April 1st, and I'm participating once again! Join me on my latest toy-making journey.

So I started with some sketches related to the boombox I posted a while back, ultimately settling on this:

I did a ton of painting but was totally unhappy with how it was coming out and ultimately ended up scrapping that plan entirely. (It also didn't feel like "me," but rather a kind of generic popular aesthetic thing).
So here's the next sketch I ended up at:

Variations on this dark haired, bespectacled, stripey-shirted gal have been appearing in my work a lot recently, and I decided she was ready to move into the 3D world.

My favorite part of Halloween is watching "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," so this year I decided to try and carve a Charlie Brown-o-lantern. It came out... okay! The pumpkin was a free giveaway, and proved to be an especially tough gourd to carve...

If I had done any better, I think it would've violated the spirit of the special. Think of this as my sheet with too many holes cut in it.

I made this illustration for a "Save The Date" announcement for Noble Desktop, an excellent little design school I just so happen to work at. Noble will be having a 20th anniversary party this November, and for the "Save The Date" I drew up this little number:

Turnaround on this was whip-fast, and I had a lot of fun with it. My boss had the idea of a guy tucking the date away in his trenchcoat, and I had fun taking that and making my work look a little noir-y.

Sexy Pictures

So I'm working on a project right now making a lot of comics I wrote about a year ago, all about my time in customer service. Anyone who's worked retail knows you always walk away with some strange stories to tell- once I'm done, I'll have a whole comic's worth.

Here's the newest strip for it, "Sexy Pictures." It may be important at this point to reiterate these stories will all be real-life.

"Sexy Pictures" as a concept would return many times during my stint in that photo lab... be on the lookout for more comics about it.

I thought it would be interesting to show my process for this, so if you're curious how I frankenstein together things into a finished page of comics, this is for you!
First, the original sketch:

When I originally sketched these stories out, I was mostly concerned with getting the story and timing down, and wasn't thinking about format at all. This one had the perfect amount of panels to be refit, so that was no real challenge. The actual layout of the panels though was pretty rudimentary, and needed reworked- a lot. A lot of pencil lead and eraser was burnt through before ending up with these pencils:

I pencil best at a smallish size; the page above is about 7"x9.25". When it comes to inking though, I have to ink larger, or I just can't get the line quality I want. I am a pretty ham-handed individual, so I like to scan my pencils in and then ink on vellum over a blown-up print out of the pencils. Here's a peek at the raw inks (without frames) on vellum, complete with lots of ugly, uncorrected mistakes:

After that, I recompile the inks in Photoshop and adjust thresholds to get things crisp for coloring/printing; at that point we've got this:

Since this is intended for a self-published mini, I have to stick with black and white. I planned on using a very limited, two-limit value palette to get things feeling more solid, so I just popped open a layer and start playing around with the two values I want to use, trying to figure out where I want them to go. Here's what I had when that was done:

Satisfied with that color sketch, at that point it's just a matter of going back in and making the actual fields of flat color the way I want them, and then you've got the final piece at the top of the post.

So there you go! Inks are done. I'd love to color this- I'd love to color everything I do- but the project this is for will most likely be printed black and white, so at most I might add some basic value down the line. For now though, it's final!

These are some pencils I just finished for a lil' comic based on a 100% real-life interaction I had after work one day while I was still in Philly. It happened on June 25, and I can pinpoint that date for reasons you'll understand if you read to the end. I wanted to finish it for the one-year anniversary of- well, again, you'll see- but unfortunately it's taken me a little longer to get to it. Inks will be up soon!

This comic will be part of a larger project, to be explained soon as well.

The original sketch of this version went a little something like this:

It was proving tricky to stuff the title into the tall, vertical panel I had left for it, and nothing was really looking right. I kind of like the above sketches a little, but this more finalized version was just lame:

Instead I decided to make the whole comic a little more panoramic and use a retro design kidney shape for the title, which worked better, but due to the space restraints, ultimately had to be cropped into the frame like you see above in the final version.

BMA Print Fair, Part 2!

The BMA Print Fair was a lot of fun, and I have to thank everyone that came out to check out the DIY Marketplace and supported us!

It was a beautiful spring day- look at those cherry blossoms outside the BMA. Sweet!

Here's the table at the beginning of the day, you can see a lot of the fantastic work from Kali and Laura on display, as well as me dreaming of caffeine.

BMA Print Fair

This weekend, the Baltimore Museum of Art is holding its 2010 Print Fair, and I'm going to have a table there on Saturday from 11AM-5PM at the "DIY Marketplace."

There's going to be a ton of excellent artists there selling prints, zines, comics, who knows what- fellow participants include Atomic Books, Ben Claassen III, Closed Caption Comics, Eight-Stone Press, The Holster, Gary Kachadourian, Leeking Inc., Narrow House, Red Emma's, Shattered Wig Press, and Squidfire.
I'll be selling some comics, prints, and other interesting bits of printed matter; I'll also be featuring prints from other talented artists, including Laura Shema, Kali Ciesimier, and Gant Powell. If you're in Baltimore this weekend you should totally stop by! Admission to the DIY Marketplace, and the BMA itself, is totally free- see you Saturday!
